Just as horses and burros cannot survive in the wild without their herd, the sanctuary cannot survive without its community of donors.
Currently Fundraising For:
+ Stock Hay Barn
+ Purchase Infrastructure
+ Ranch Manager
+ Care for Equines
+ Emergency Vet Fund

So many well-intended people have attempted to provide sanctuary to displaced wild equines and have, unfortunately, had to close their doors when they couldn’t stay financially afloat.

We refuse to accept that fate and are committed to building a well-capitalized organization at launch for longevity and security.

We have created a plan to ensure we can keep our promise to our residents and our donors by insisting we do not rescue any animals until our initial goal of $500,000 is met.

This will ensure we have the funds to stock our hay barn, purchase the remaining infrastructure items we need, and hire a Ranch Manager so that we can safely care for our wild equines and properly steward our land. This goal will cover our expenses for at least two years as we continue to fundraise for the future.

We want you to know that every dollar you give to MMBS will be used with the utmost care and consideration. We will never take your trust for granted and are operating the sanctuary in full transparency to the public. Your financial contribution will literally save the lives of deserving equines.

Motherlode Mustang and Burro Sanctuary, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, making your donation tax deductible.

USE YOUR VOICE

Advocate for your wild equines still on the range!

We believe it is possible to create change for the future of our country’s wild horses and burros. Through education and advocacy, we commit to fighting for their freedoms and their right to remain wild. We will do this everyday for the rest of our lives, but we cannot do it alone.

We know that change only comes when we ALL use our voices.

We have learned that our representatives in Congress really do listen to their constituents' voices. Please use yours to let your Senators and Congressperson know how you want our wild horses and burros to be treated on our public lands. It is not hard and does not take much time, but really makes a difference.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."

-Dr. Jane Goodall

Any words you choose to say will help. Speak from your heart. If you don't know what to say, the high level message is simple and only requires two sentences:

"I support our wild horses and burros and want them to remain free on our public lands. I do not want my tax dollars going towards roundups, holding facilities or removing their freedom in any way."

That is all it takes to make a difference.

Should you choose to say more, here are some points MMBS believes in:

  • Managing wild horses and burros on the range is less expensive and more humane than roundups and long-term holding.

  • Reducing livestock grazing in Herd Management Areas that are designated for wild horses and burros is a necessity and will ensure there is enough forage for all wildlife.

  • Fertility control for mares, specifically PZP, is the best solution to keep herd numbers down.

  • Helicopters are a brutally inhumane and extremely expensive method of rounding up horses. When necessary, the “bait and trap” method should be used instead. There is a bill in Congress right now, H.R. 4356, that aims to prohibit the use of aircraft in roundups.

  • All horses in the US, wild and domestic, are at risk of falling into the slaughter pipeline. The SAFE Act seeks to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the U.S. and prohibit their export across borders for that purpose. (H.R. 1661 in the House and S. 775 in the Senate)

  • Wild horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; they strengthen the diversity of life in our country and inspire all who encounter them. They must be protected and preserved with the ethos of the 1971 Act intended.
